John D. Roberts, M.D.
Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care
John D. Roberts, M.D., is associate director for clinical research at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center. Also a professor of internal medicine and hematology, oncology and palliative care at the VCU School of Medicine, Roberts is an expert in the treatment of melanoma and urological cancers. His research focuses on the development of new agents and treatments for fighting cancer. He oversees more than 100 cancer clinical trials at VCU Massey.

Michael G. Chang, M.D.
Michael G. Chang, M.D., is assistant professor of radiation oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center. An expert in the treatment of central nervous system, thoracic, prostate and breast cancers, Chang’s clinical and research interests focus on stereotactic radiotherapy and intensity modulated radiotherapy. He has served as the lead investigator on clinical research trials in cancers of the prostate and brain.

Harry D. Bear, M.D., Ph.D.
Harry D. Bear, M.D., Ph.D., is chairman of the Division of Surgical Oncology at Virginia CommonwealthUniversity Massey Cancer Center. Also a professor of surgery and of microbiology and immunology at VCU School of Medicine and director of the Breast Health Center at VCU Health System, Bear is an expert in the treatment of breast, melanoma and gastrointestinal cancers. His
laboratory research interests include immunotherapy (or using the patient’s own immune cells to treat cancers), and much of his laboratory research has been translated to clinical trials. Bear has long been involved with clinical research trials in breast and colon cancer, serving on the board of directors of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), and he has played a key role in international studies of breast cancer chemotherapy used prior to surgery.

Brian J. Kaplan, M.D.
Brian J. Kaplan, M.D., is an associate professor of surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center. Also the director of the General Surgery Residency Program at VCU’s School of Medicine, Kaplan has been consistently nominated as the “Best Attending” by his residents and third- and fourth-year medical students. He was selected as one of Richmond Magazine’s “Top Docs” in 2010 for colon and rectal surgery and earned the highest votes in surgical oncology. Kaplan is an expert in the treatment of cancers of the liver, pancreas, bile ducts, stomach, esophagus and colon, as well as of melanomas and sarcomas. He has been the lead investigator on clinical research trials on pancreatic cancer.

Mitchell S. Anscher, M.D.
Mitchell S. Anscher, M.D., is the Florence and Hyman Meyers Chair of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center. He is a fellow of the American College of Radiology and the American Society of Radiation Oncology and has been named as one of America’s Top Doctors for the past 11 years. An expert in all forms of radiation therapy, including external beam radiation therapy and brachytherapy, Anscher specializes in the evaluation and management of patients who have experienced severe complications from radiation treatments. His clinical interests focus on the treatment of patients with genitourinary malignancies, particularly prostate cancer. His nationally recognized laboratory and clinical research centers on the prevention and treatment of normal tissue injury after cancer therapy. Anscher has been the lead investigator on clinical trials on brain metastases and cancers of the prostate and breast.
