About Massey

Clinical and research leadership

One out of every two men and one out of every three women will be diagnosed with cancer in his or her lifetime.

Despite these daunting statistics, the VCU Massey Cancer Center is committed to providing the best available resources for research, treatment, control, prevention and ultimately a cure for the many diseases known as cancer. As one of only 65 National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Centers in the U.S., Massey is among the nation’s leading research and clinical institutions.

Massey’s hallmark activity is translational research, where we work to bring laboratory discoveries into the lives of our patients as quickly and safely as possible. We believe it is the key to winning the war against cancer.

The translational research approach starts with studying the fundamental molecular processes that underlie the development of cancer. Once the target(s) is identified, novel agents or approaches to therapy can be developed. Those agents or approaches that show promise in preclinical studies are then studied in patients for toxicity and efficacy. There are currently more than 100 active clinical trials at Massey … another indication of our leadership role.
