“The information you provided, particularly the videotape on autologous bone marrow transplants, helped the family understand her treatment and her chances for survival.”
Annette Marie Duwell,
family member
How do I contact the library?
You may call the library at (804) 828-8709 or e-mail us at mcclibrary@vcu.edu.
How can the library help me?
A diagnosis of cancer raises lots of questions for patients and their loved ones. At the VCU Massey Cancer Center, we believe that families are essential members of our team. To help them meet the challenge of cancer, we have created one of the best consumer libraries in the country dedicated exclusively to information about cancer.
What’s in the library?
We provide up-to-date information written in language that you can understand. The Linen-Powell Patient Resource Library collection includes books, pamphlets, videotapes and audiotapes. We have information on the following:
- Cancer treatment
- Site-specific cancers
- Coping
- Children and cancer
- Diet and nutrition
- Hospice and home care
- Loss and grief
Online computer access to the National Cancer Institute’s Physician’s Data Query system allows us to give you up-to-date diagnosis, staging and supportive care printouts that are revised monthly. If you are looking for clinical trials, the PDQ system has international listings.
But I am not being treated at Massey. Can I use the library?
The Linen-Powell Patient Resource Library is open to anyone, anywhere, who is coping with cancer. You may request an information packet by phone at (804) 828-8709, through e-mail (mcclibrary@vcu.edu) or stop by in person to use our resources.
How do I borrow materials?
- We are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
- Books and videos may be checked out. Pamphlets are available for free.
- Volunteers are available in the library to help you in your search.
How can I help?
Volunteers are a vital part of our library team. We are always looking for special people who are interested in helping patients and family members during this difficult time of their lives.
The library is supported by gifts and donations from people like you, community organizations, corporations and foundations. Donations build the collection, upgrade equipment and improve our ability to serve you.
Okay, how do I get there?
Our libraries are located in the Massey Cancer Center, Room G-123, next to the Dalton Oncology Clinic and at our Stony Point facility.
