Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT)
The Department of Radiation Oncology at VCU Massey Cancer Center was one of the first in the nation to offer Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy. IMRT refers to dividing each treatment beam into many smaller beamlets. The intensity of each beamlet is varied to create a highly conformal treatment plan where high radiation doses are delivered to the tumor while sparing surrounding normal tissues. The treatment plan is customized to sculpt the radiation dose for maximum tumor damage with significantly fewer side effects. Where appropriate, a newer form of IMRT, called Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT), may be used to further improve the radiation dose distribution.
