Hospice care
Hospice services are available to people who can no longer benefit from curative treatment. The typical hospice patient has a life expectancy of six months or less. Many hospice patients receive care at home.
Hospices are designed to provide sensitive support for people in the final phase of a terminal illness. Hospice care works to help them carry on an alert, pain-free life and to manage other symptoms so that their last days may be spent with dignity and quality at home or in a home-like setting.
Services are provided by a team of trained professionals who provide medical care and support services not only to the patient but to the entire family. Both the patient and his or her family are routinely included in the decision-making process.
Referrals to hospice can be made by a doctor or other health-care professional, clergy, family member or friend. Each hospice program has its own admission criteria. Hospice is a covered benefit under many private insurance plans, and it also is a covered Medicaid benefit.
