After cancer: fears, family and relationships

The Richmond Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure partnered with Massey Cancer Center to sponsor the Cancer Survivorship Symposia Series. The information in this session, presented on Aug. 2, 2007, covers the psychological impact of cancer on patients, on their families and on their relationships. The speakers addressed spousal relationships, pediatric cancer survivors and their families, and the impact of cancer, and then how to identify problems and how to address them.

Presented by Sharon L. Manne, Ph.D.

Sharon Manne is the director of the Psycho-Oncology Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, and is a senior member at Fox Chase Cancer Center. She holds adjunct professorships at Temple University and at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. She is widely known for research on psychological responses to cancer, particularly how cancer may affect couples and their relationships.

Pediatric cancer survivors and their families: psychological late effects

Presented by Ahna L.H. Pai, Ph.D.

Ahna Pai is an assistant professor in the Division of Behavioral Medicine and Clinical Psychology at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She’s done extensive research in how pediatric cancer may affect parent and family dynamics. She has also studied the emotional impact a cancer experience can have on survivors of pediatric cancer.
