Welcome to the Department of Radiation Oncology

Message From the Chair

Mitchell S. Anscher, M.D.

Welcome to the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and the Massey Cancer Center. Radiation Oncology is a medical specialty that uses radiation as a highly effective modality to treat a wide spectrum of cancers in adults

and children. We provide patient care services at five centers in the Greater Richmond area. In these centers, patients are treated using the most advanced technology including linear accelerators, CT simulators and brachytherapy units. The forms of radiotherapy cover all possible treatment capabilities, from standard external beam and stereotactic radiotherapy to intensity-modulated radiation therapy, image-guided radiation therapy, and high- and low-dose-rate brachytherapy, offering a unique resource for people in Virginia and beyond.

More than 30 faculty members are distributed across three divisions of the department. The Clinical Division has 10 Board-certified radiation oncologists, all of whom subspecialize in the radiotherapeutic management of different tumor types, thus offering the greatest possible expertise for patients. The Division of Medical Physics is comprised of 11 Ph.D.-level medical physicists who provide technical expertise in all forms of radiotherapy delivery, with special emphasis on brachytherapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy, and image-guided radiation therapy research. Four Ph.D.-level scientists in the Division of Molecular Radiobiology collaborate in a comprehensive basic science and translational research program, unraveling cellular responses to radiation and their genetic and pharmacological modulation.

The VCU Department of Radiation Oncology is a leading radiation oncology center and is one of only a few nationwide that can claim the most advanced research programs in all three areas of the radiation oncology specialty. The department conducts National Cancer Institute-funded research in its Clinical, Medical Physics and Molecular Radiobiology sections.
