Urologic Tumor Center advances with da Vinci Surgical System

Massey’s Urologic Tumor Center has increased its capacity to treat cancers of the urinary system with the addition of a state-of-the-art da Vinci Surgical System. The Urologic Tumor Center is led by two physicians: Lance Hampton, M.D., a urologist specializing in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic techniques; and George Guruli, M.D., Ph.D., a physician-researcher who focuses on the mechanisms of prostate cancer and immune cells.

Hampton, director of robotic urology and an assistant professor of surgery, answers questions about the new da Vinci robotic system.

What procedures are being performed using the da Vinci system?

I perform several different operations for both benign and malignant disease of the bladder, prostate and kidney. I, along with our robotic surgery team, have performed countless radical prostatectomy operations for prostate cancer, and nephrectomies for both benign and malignant conditions of the kidney. Our number of cases continues to increase, and we are typically utilizing the robot several times a week.

What are some advantages of the da Vinci system?

The da Vinci robot has multiple advantages for urologic surgery. Because of the magnified 3-D vision, I am able to perform complex nerve-sparing prostatectomies, which will cure the patient of prostate cancer and preserve his quality of life, maintaining erections and continence. During kidney surgery, the robot system allows me to fully appreciate the intricate 3-D spatial relationships of large blood vessels around the kidney in order to minimize blood loss.

What is the Urologic Tumor Center’s team approach?

Massey Cancer Center pioneered the concept of multidisciplinary teams, a practice in which multiple genito-urinary cancer specialists meet regularly to evaluate, discuss and plan treatments for patients. This approach means that patients can get all of their treatments at the same place from professionals who work together and communicate regularly, rather than putting the burden on patients to coordinate communication among various doctors throughout the region. This is a significant and important advantage of receiving care at a comprehensive academic medical center.
