Complex and rare cancers

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Virginia has named VCU Massey Cancer Center a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare CancersSM. The distinction recognizes comprehensive inpatient care from multi-disciplinary teams that have subspecialty training and distinguished clinical expertise in treating complex and rare subtypes of cancers. The designation is focused primarily on multi-disciplinary treatment planning and complex, major surgical treatments.

“The Blue Distinction designation identifies institutions that lead the way in delivering quality outcomes,” said Jay Schukman, M.D., lead medical director for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Cancers considered complex and rare include acute leukemia, primary brain cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, head and neck cancers, liver cancer and pancreatic cancer.
