Certificate of Public Need
Enhanced technology leads to better care
VCU Massey Cancer Center is Richmond’s only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center and one of only 69 in the country. We provide comprehensive, award-winning cancer care with a full range of medical and support services, the highest-quality treatments, advanced technologies and a compassionate approach combined with cutting edge research into new and better ways to treat, prevent and cure cancer.
It’s important that we have the latest available treatment technologies in order to provide the best possible cancer care to residents in Virginia and beyond and stay on the front lines of cancer research. Massey is working to be one of the first cancer centers in the nation to incorporate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) into radiation therapy treatment and planning. The increased precision will allow us to create more personalized treatment plans and better target patients’ cancer while sparing healthy tissue, leading to improved outcomes and reduced side effects. This equipment will also provide the needed platform for important research opportunities focusing on improved radiation therapy treatment delivery and planning.
To support this effort, the VCU Health System has filed a Certificate of Public Need application with the Virginia Department of Health for the addition of a state-of-the-art, MRI-equipped linear accelerator and simulation equipment.
